Essential Training Required For Grand Canyon River Rafting Guides

Friday 19 August 2011 @ 2:07 pm

If you’ve decided upon a Grand Canyon Colorado River rafting expedition, you probably already have an idea that you are ready for the adventure of a lifetime. Riding the world-class whitewater and enjoying everything else this impressive canyon has to offer is an experience you will likely always remember. While many get an adrenaline rush just thinking about the trip, others have trepidations regarding the potential danger involved and their personal safety. You can rest assured that the boat captains in this adventure are among the most experienced and capable river guides on the planet. Every single one of these river-rat supermen and women is licensed and certified, and has a depth of knowledge, training, and experience that is all geared to keep all tourists safe from harm while they are having the time of their lives.

Your Colorado River guides most likely started their journey to the top of their vocation by either participating in intensive, hands-on training courses, or by extensive apprenticing either specifically in the Grand Canyon, or on comparable rivers. In fact all guides who have attained the position of captains of rafts have both extensive experience, as well as technical training.  They start their professions, after training, as associate guides on the rafts and have to wait for opportunities to captain their own rafts. Among the required courses from experts in the field are river mechanics, wilderness first aid, oarsmanship, the history and geology of the region, weather patterns, best camping practices, client services, and so much more. In addition to training and becoming certified, Arizona requires that all guides be re-certified every two years.

For river guides, boats and riggings are the equipment of their trade, and they know their craft inside and out, how to maintain and repair them, and when they are safe to operate. Thoroughly inspecting their craft before each launch is as routine and necessary to them as putting the key in a car’s ignition.

One of the most crucial skills that guides study is “river hydraulics.” The river’s movement creates a huge amount of energy, and when they wend around corners or obstacles such as rocks, the relative forces determines the velocity of the currents, both on top and underneath. River guides recognize how water operates in varying conditions and the best way to steer the raft through them. They also know that rivers adjust, sometimes every day, due to wind, rain, snow melt, rock slides, and more, so guides scout the river continuously in order to choose the best route through rapids. The end goal is always to give you the very best adventure while ensuring your safety.

Without a doubt, on the river as in life, “stuff” does occasionally happen, and if it does, your guides are more than prepared to deal with it. They have special training in CPR, first aid, white water rescue (a specialized and remarkable set of procedures), lifeguard skills, and even wilderness evacuation if required. During their comprehensive training programs, guides will have to “de-flip” overturned rafts (no small feat as these rafts can be huge - running as large as 35 feet long and 15 feet wide), so they have hands-on experience with that skill if necessary as well.

The best guides are specialists in “leave no trace” camping, effective camp management, gourmet camp food preparation, and in safely leading nature hikes to places of interest. To top that off, they will keep you entertained with local stories, facts, and folklore all the while keeping you safe for your once-in-a-lifetime Grand Canyon rafting adventure.

Little Known Facts About the Grand Canyon Can Be Learned on a Colorado River Rafting Trip

Thursday 18 August 2011 @ 1:46 pm

Because the Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, most people, especially residents in the United States, know quite a bit about it via TV shows, travel to the site, news and magazine articles, and stories from friends and relatives who have been there. In spite of that, most of us are completely ignorant of some of the most interesting facts and folklore about this amazing landmark. For those who have little to no interest in spending hours doing their own research, but who also love adventure, a Colorado River rafting trip can be a great avenue to satisfy curiosity and take an adventure packed vacation at the same time.

The exhilarating trips offered by White Water outfitters vary in length from as little as one day to two weeks and even more. While on the river, vacationers will marvel at exceptional scenery, and of course get wet and wild shooting the rapids. But during off river times, the guides, well versed in information about the Grand Canyon, love to share all they know with any interested visitors. There is so much fascinating information that is not common knowledge about this region, the history, the formation of the canyon and the relative youth of the Colorado River itself. So, if you’re booking a Colorado River white water rafting trip, not only will you be in for the ride of your life, but you’ll learn a ton about the history of the Canyon, its geology, its wildlife, and of course folklore.

The canyon is about 18 miles across at its widest point and averages a mile in depth from the rim. Traveling by river, you’ll be one of the few who get to experience the canyon from the bottom up. As you cruise down the river, you’ll be passing rock formations that scientists now believe took anywhere from three to six million years to form. The layers of rock that are visible at the bottom of the canyon can be billions of years old.

Geologic changes have taken place over eons of time, but the formation of this seventh wonder of the world was due to almost cataclysmic forces. Because much of the sedimentary rock in the canyon is found only on ocean floors or along shorelines, it is believed that much of this landmark’s formation occurred as the oceans ebbed and flowed through it as continents drifted and landmasses rose and dropped over the ages. Erosion caused by the river’s flow, along with ice movement and wind are still believed to be the major forces credited for creation of the spires and buttes that dominate the scenery.

During the formation, is now recognized by most that the course of the Colorado River has shifted multiple times. In spite of all that scientists and geologists already know, there is still no consensus on just when the mighty Colorado began to flow through the canyon, which way it was flowing, or where it has emptied at different times throughout its history.

Recent findings suggest that an abundance of volcanic activity has contributed to some of the rapid changes that have taken place, and may have been responsible for appearance and disappearance of huge waterfalls as well as the changes in the course of the river itself. While the river now flows to the southwest and is destined for the Sea of Cortez in the Gulf of California, some believe that at one time, it flowed north into Utah, across Nevada, and then ultimately emptied into the Pacific Ocean via California.

Wildlife abounds in the Canyon, and your river guide may tell you about the hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians that make the place their home. During your trip, as you are sleeping under the stars, black bears, cougars, antelope and so much more will be out and about throughout the vast regions of the canyon. During the daylight hours, the California condor might buzz by as they are attracted to human activity. This is the only place on earth where these birds still fly freely, so if you do see one of the few remaining, you can count yourself very lucky.

Because the Canyon is so old, it’s natural to assume that dinosaur bones must be there in droves, but the opposite is the case. While they’ve been found along the rim of the Colorado plateau, no dinosaur fossils have ever been dug up inside the Canyon.

It’s common knowledge that this entire region is swelteringly hot during the summer months, but most people are probably unaware that this is also monsoon territory. The weather in the region can change very quickly, and heavy rains can create monstrous flash floods even during the hottest months of the year. Floods such as these have been responsible for changing the river’s flow; rock slides caused by flooding can modify the course of the river thereby changing the flow in some areas. Entire waterfalls can disappear where others may suddenly appear, at least for a while. Because of man’s intervention with the creation of the Glen Canyon Dam and Lake Powell, these floods are not nearly as torrential as before the dam was created. However, with human intervention, much of the cleansing effects of these floods no longer takes place either.

In short, there is so much to know about the Canyon. Getting your feet wet on the river, camping out and listening to your guide share information – that’s the best way to experience the Grand Canyon and really get to know it.

Rafting the Grand Canyon - 70 Named Rapids and More

Wednesday 17 August 2011 @ 3:21 pm

Grand Canyon rafting offers some of the best white water rafting on this planet. What more could an adventurer want than scores of world-class rapids spread out over close to 300 river miles, all contained within an ancient geological wonder? Of course, one doesn’t have to run the full length of the Colorado River in order to enjoy some of the wildest rides. Trips of all lengths are available, from single-day to multi-week adventures.

In all, there are more than 70 rapids on the mighty Colorado running through the Grand Canyon that are exciting enough to have been named. As opposed to other rivers where rapids are classed from I to VI depending on level of difficulty, the Colorado rates its rapids on a scale from I to X, with Class X being the most difficult - and most awesome. The higher the rating, the more perilous the rapid is considered to be, and the more important it gets to be to have river guides very competent in reading the nuances of the river. Not the for the faint of heart, a full trip down the river is roughly 296 miles and lasts two weeks on a motorized craft. This is thought to be one of the the best ways to experience everything the river and the canyon has to offer.

Rafting the Grand Canyon

takes one for the ride of a lifetime. Lava Falls, Horn Creek, Hance, Dubendorff, Hermit and Crystal are but a few of the rapids along the route, and they are probably the most exhilarating. Lava Falls, for instance, is found in a narrow alley of the canyon, surrounded on both sides by sloping, volcanic walls. In just 500 yards, the river drops 20 feet. Then it drops another 19 feet over the next half mile. Crystal rapid - sometimes rated Class X - is generally considered the most challenging, most dangerous shoot. Its 30-foot, single-stretch drop is the most dramatic in the canyon. It owes its rating and reputation to a massive hole in the center of the rapid. (A hole forms when water pours over a submerged object with such force and slope that it causes water immediately on the other side of it to flow back upstream). The hole at Crystal can reach heights of 25 feet and a width of 60 feet. Crystal has also claimed a few lives over the years, but it’s partly that element of danger that thrills rafters. It is also a large part of the reason why a skilled guide is so essential to look after the tourists who have hired the outfitter.

Two-thirds of the rapids in the canyon are affected by what is known as debris flow. This is a geological attribute of the canyon, where anything from sand and clay to tree stumps and huge boulders have rushed down the side of the canyon into the river. While there’s little danger of a landslide occurring as a rafting expedition passes, debris flows can drastically alter rapids from year to year. As debris builds up in the water, holes can form, pathways change and rapids can grow. Since most rapids on the Colorado are affected by debris flows, part of an outfitter’s job is to have their guides and boatmen scout the ever-changing river in order to know what to expect around every turn.

River Expeditioners take all important precautions when navigating the river. Pro Grand Canyon rafting trips feature neoprene rafts. The biggest advantage of this material is its flexibility, enabling boats to bend and flex while going over big waves and obstacles. It’s important to remember that guides will never compromise the safety of a group, only venturing down rapids that can be properly navigated by their boats. A truly exceptional experience, Colorado River raft trips test a rafter’s mettle, but they also provide the ride of a lifetime.

Yakin’ with the King!

Monday 15 August 2011 @ 6:04 pm

Yakin’ with The King
John McKean

Hungry hordes completely surrounded my kayak, churning water as far as the eye could see. “If these are sharks or piranhas, I’m a goner!” I thought. Fortunately, Lake Erie doesn’t harbor either of those two man-eaters. What I was facing instead was over three acres of ravenous white bass! Coming to mind then, in the levity of a situation that did not involve me being devoured, was Julia Roberts’ famous line from the movie Pretty Woman – “This is gonna be a SURE THING!” And it was!!

Heck, all I had to do was gently lob cast a 1/16 oz. jig, which carried a 3” plastic fantail minnow, with two hands on the long handle of my Kayak King Emmrod. Direction didn’t matter. But the double-fisted grip and springy tip allowed superb distance of the light bait without any unnecessary energy expended to potentially rock the small craft. I just drifted slowly, sat still, and hauled in bass after bass, which struck on every cast. Talk about livin’!

Modern sit-on-top fishing kayaks are constructed to be as efficient as they are productive. Multiple rod holders, numerous tackle storing hatches, fore and aft bungee tie downs for coolers and gear, depth finder set-ups, and easy tracking hull designs provide virtually all the benefits of a big bass boat, yet with everything close at hand for immediate deployment. About the only drawback to kayak fishing, in fact, is standard fishing gear – particularly the cumbersome, ever lengthening spinning and casting rods. Enter the Kayak King and its brand new cousin, the Rugged Flex.

It’s such exhilaration to paddle a kayak that I generally begin by trolling. Breathe in the fresh lake air, delight in scanning the scenery all around, skim carefree across the water’s surface, and thrill to the mild upper body “pump” created by hand propelling the craft. What I discovered early on that was NOT needed to upset this serene setting was a long fishing rod in my way! The Emmrod, in addition to many other attributes, is the perfect fishing companion in that its short length never interferes with the blade stroke! Indeed, with the extra long Kayak King handle firmly in place in my kayak’s deep right side rod holder, or even in the special pocket drilled in my center console, I’m permitted to dig my paddle right in just past the close, low lying line while trolling; in other words, a normal, natural stroke without hassle or modification.

Most often I make my initial trolling run over a shallow breakline, say where water deepens suddenly from 6 to 8 feet, as determined by the left side mounted depth finder. A weed edge or a stump row is also a very productive spot to pull my usual lightweight jig and soft plastic swimming minnow combo. Speed is varied, but usually determined by my energy or laziness on any given day (but at my age, always tending toward the slow side!!). Whatever speed creates the initial strike, however, is matched as closely as possible from that point on. I just keep following the line with a loose eye on the depth finder, to insure proper positioning, until the fish take. If they don’t cooperate within a reasonable amount of time, I move out deeper to the next breakline and begin again.

Neat thing about the Kayak King pole is that I never have trouble detecting a strike! Its compact size places it constantly in my immediate visual range, and those steel coils flex with authority under a fish attack! Also the exposed portion of the handle (the part not within the rod holder) is easily grabbed, since the pole is sitting right in front of me, to begin fighting back! Rarely, do I need more than a gentle “punch” forward to set the hook, since an Emmrod, by nature, is a lot more stable than any long fiberglass or graphite model.

Interestingly, an Emmrod will often get fish while trolling that will not strike lures pulled by standard poles. I did a few experiments recently, comparing a regular light six-foot graphite spinning rod against one of the new two-tip Rugged Flex tops, mounted on a Kayak King handle; same lure, same approach, same water, yet ALL fish came on the Rugged Flex! This leads me to believe that the long soft tip rods, when waved around during sometimes shaky paddling (of which I’m guilty), create wild, unnatural lure motion, whereas the Emmrod, which is “closer to water” and not prone to whipping about, allows a bait to behave as it should!

Now when a section of water yields two or three strikes, it’s time to stop paddlin’ and commence chuckin! Drift and redrift the hot area, casting with the same Kayak King set-up. Absolutely no need to change the winning rod and lure set up. Merely use the outstanding leverage of the long cork handle to easily toss out the lure, point the tiptop guide downward and in that same general direction, and commence a medium fast retrieve. Fan cast around and haul in whatever your original troll may have uncovered, whether a school of bass, walleyes, crappies, or pike! Hope you have a net nearby in one of the spare rod holders, and, for heaven’s sake, don’t rock the kayak in all the excitement!!

Yes, the kayak/Emmrod system is as enjoyable and easy as it sounds. A word of warning, though –remember there’s a nice sized cooler strapped in right behind you and within easy reach; keep a few of these tasty rascals but beware of the adrenaline fueled temptation to throw all the lunkers on ice! You really don’t want to stay up all night cleaning fish (believe me!!!); after all, tomorrow you’ll be fired up to start bright and early to again go “‘yakin’ with the King”!!

What Pick About Golf Swing Plane?

Saturday 13 August 2011 @ 12:57 pm

What would you say is the main element of a solid and effective golf swing sequence? For me, seeing quite a few amateur and professional golfers when i do, the answer isn’t in doubt. It’s the ability to have their golf club stay consistently to the proper  swing plane.

That’s not to say that there aren’t any other facets of the swing that are of excellent importance. But as I view it, the only component of a fine swing that you really cannot do without, is the   golf swing plane.   How come is that? Well simply get, the swing path and swing plane that the golf club travels upon, determines how squarely a club will eventually contact the golf ball. Your grip could get weak or strong. Your posture may very well be hunched or tall. A person’s swing tempo perhaps is normally too quick or overly slow. And your club face may very well be wide open or enclosed shut. But if the tavern head is traveling relating to the proper swing plane, no matter how poorly your repair are, you will even now strike the ball squarely. Alternatively, if your grip is perfect and your posture suitable, and your tempo is impeccable along with your club face square, they don’t matter much if your swing path and move plane are off a level or two. It will be anybody’s guess where your shot can be.

As a reminder, the swing plane is an imaginary line running through the golf ball at address up over the golfer’s shoulders, and another imaginary line drafted the golf shaft in the club, through their appropriate hip area. It is very difficult for many people to stay within the right golf swing plane. We so often pay attention to the other mechanical portions of the swing for example the grip, shoulder and cool turn, hands position, abs, and so on, we seldom focus on the swing path that the golf club travels on and the swing plane that the application must stay within. So what do It is advisable to do to hone in a very fine, on plane swing movement? Practice on a few swing drills is my primary answer. There are a few sound drills that you can work on that provides a feel for swinging in the proper plane. Check out You Hose for helpful instructional videos on the subject, there are tons of them one could use.

Secondly, and the best method to develop a proper upon plane golf swing in my opinion, is to get hold of a quality golf swing trainer to train on. Your local club or certified professional may have one that you can use or rent. Or better yet, consider buying your private swing plane trainer which you can set up at your home. These  golf swing trainers  are simple to install and like nothing else you have tried, they guide your club over the proper path. At first that you are surprised to see what steps off of a correct swing plane your action is. That’s because you might not even be able to remain the golf club hold of the golf swing trainer at the beginning. But the ultimate beauty the hands down devices, is that they will teach you the correct path within just minutes! For they provide feedback and feel for tips on how to, and not to swing the golf club. Something that, if left for the own sleuthing, you may never discover. The more diligently that you really practice on a move trainer, the more muscle memory you can expect to build. This will ensure that you will be embedding these solid rules into your technique. The beneficial results shall be manifested in the confident golf swing you do take with you to the golf course. There are a amount of fine swing plane cross trainers o the market and the good news is that they are at price points from just $ 30+ to about $ 1, 000. So there is certain as being a good one to match your needs and your budget. Relating to the golf course too many thoughts on swing mechanics and skills can kill any hope of executing a desirable golf swing. The the next occasion you tee off, all you have to your normal address together with set your fine fundamentals set. Then the only thing to be able to concentrate on, is returning the club head to exactly where it commenced at address, squarely behind the golf ball. Swinging in the correct golf swing plane will help you in accomplishing just of which.

Obtaining less expensive travel tickets for your journey

Wednesday 10 August 2011 @ 10:36 am

If you are planning on getting away for a few days then you’re going to know the greatest thing that you suggested.  Work and family matters can take its toll on you and that is when you’re going to need to get away from everything for a few weeks which, let’s face it, might be the best few weeks of your entire year.

The problems which you may encounter may be that you would like to get any discount prices for your airplane tickets nonetheless but finding  cheap airline tickets is possible.

Airline tickets for cheap journeys may be found so you don’t have to worry about spending too much over flights which you could be spending that money on a number of things as treating yourself to a relaxing day at the local spa so you should think about methods you could save yourself money when it comes to traveling.

If you’re travelling out of the country then most of the times then you are going to have to get a flight out especially if it’s half way around the world but if it’s simply out to France or Germany afterwards you could use the ferry or the Chanel Tunnel if you live in Britain but afterwards it is a long time that you’re going to need to travel.  The only way you could take rail or a coach could be if you are only going to someplace throughout country otherwise you have to search out cheapest airline tickets prices.

Now airways can be confusing at the best of times and not everybody prefers to deal with them simply because we all have had some problems with the companies and have ended up paying for two tickets because of miscommunications and delays to traffic and so forth but you don’t need to be concerned any more.

You could get your tickets cheap and have no complications – the answer, going on line and booking them straight from the web site and ensuring that you read each and every single small print there’s so that you know which the rules are.  If you should arrive two hours before check in or if you will have to bring a passport for a infant under a certain age; after that it is a thing that you’re always going to need to think of and make sure you read so that you don’t have to pay the price for a regular ticket in the end.

So don’t just go for the first tickets you see; shop around at some comparison websites and also checking competitive airliners to see which have got the best deal. You do not simply need to fly with the larger and fashionable airliners; you could go for just about anyone of the airways available just as long as you’re comfortable with flying with them.

How to Find a Campground

Tuesday 9 August 2011 @ 11:24 am

Are you interested in going on a camping adventure? If you are, you will need to find a public campground to visit.  Public campgrounds are also commonly referred to as campground parks.  You can typically find information about campgrounds at sports stores that sell downhill skis and other outdoor adventure products.  If this is your first time going on a camping adventure, you may be wondering exactly how you can go about finding a campground park.

When it comes to locating a campground park to camp at, you will find that you, literally, have an unlimited number of options to choose from.  One of those selections
involves using your local telephone book. Your local telephone book should have the name and contact information of local campground parks.  If you are looking to camp locally, this is a nice and easy way for to find and familiarize yourself with local campground parks.

In addition to using your local phone book, you may also want to ask those that you know for recommendations.  Since camping is a popular activity in the United States, there is a good chance that many of your friends or family members have gone camping before.  If they have, you may want to get information on the campground park that they visited, as well as a general overview of their camping adventure, like if they enjoyed it or not.
